Hello. I am typing this late at night in my studio on the eve of the single being released. It is raining and I am preparing to let go of something that I have been building since 2022 (!) which is really weird but very exciting. I thought it would be pertinent to mark the release with a story about its making. The title A Shift In The Land came from a conversation with Kielder engineer, Mike Roberts. Part of his job was to look for subsidence caused by ruptures in the integrity of the wall of the dam. As we stood in the Valve Tower with water sloshing all around us, something happened. Mike explained how a satellite system would soon replace this aspect of his work. By chance, I had stumbled upon the emotional core for the compositions that would follow. In that moment, I saw Kielder as a vessel for obsolescence, change, ageing and all the strangeness that accompanies these things. Later that night in my wood cabin, I spent a couple of hours improvising on my synthesizer. The main melody for "Shift" sprang forth. I got lucky. You can listen to my conversation with Mike here.
