I recently acquired a small device that can replicate every video game from 1979 to 2001. It is a portal to the past. Long-forgotten memories have resurfaced while spending time with the little box. I was simultaneously unprepared and delighted to be transported in this way. Nostalgia comes from a combination of the Greek words “Nostos” (homecoming) and “Algos” (pain). Artists are often told that nostalgia is a toxic process. Strong references to the past can result in art that topples into sentimental tribute or pastiche. However, if utilised correctly and disguised with discretion, nostalgia can be a powerful ally. For musicians, recalling or referencing other eras through sound design, phrasing, and rhythm is an essential skill. An artist may present dozens of references during a recording session; it is the musician’s responsibility to interpret and transmogrify this information so as not to reveal the source. In parallel to this, trawling through forgotten corners of literature, fashion, performance art, architecture, design, and theatre is as important as instrumental practice, if not more so. A meandering side-quest through old, forgotten culture is essential to developing a broad sonic palette. These actions are individually nuanced, largely unconscious, and often undocumented. Constantly evolving, layer upon layer. A search without end. An honourable goal in itself.
