Over the next few days, I witnessed Bill Callahan singing America! under a Texas sky, had a close encounter with a rattlesnake, played Wurlitzer Electric Piano with the Heartless Bastards, and had a conversation with the late Boyd Elder that I am still trying to understand. I attended a baseball game on the outskirts of town where St. Vincent sang the national anthem. On returning to Austin, I met with Marc Ford and his band, who had been rattling around America in a bus. I had played on his record with some friends - a dream come true. We shared an evening singing backing vocals on a trailer near a highway as the sun set, playing Hammond organ at the Continental Club, and ending with messy drive-through tacos. I nearly skipped my flight to run away with them to New Orleans. I think of this trip often. Never underestimate what can happen in ten days.
